Welcome to GTCdigital

11/10/2002

Welcome to GTCdigital, This, your first visit to our bulletin (or our first visit to your mailbox) will whet your appetite....for science. It marks the beginning of our mission to tell the world about a telescope which, when it enters service in 2005, will be one of the world's largest and most advanced: the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC).

The bulletin will keep you up to date with the construction of the giant and will contain a link to our new website. On the site, the hexagons will direct you to sections like IF YOU’RE IN A HURRY, which gives the answers to ten quick questions if you haven’t got time to read the rest of the site; ONCE UPON A TIME, a history of the project since its inception; HOW WILL IT WORK?, an explanation of what each part of the telescope will do and how it will do it; INSTRUMENTATION, about the instruments selected for the GTC; THE GTC’S INNOVATIONS, describing the groundbreaking advances of this 10.4 metre diameter primary mirror telescope;THE PROJECT OFFICE, about the people who work for GRANTECAN, the public company with management responsibility for building the GTC; OPTICS, an important section about active and adaptive optics; and SCIENCE WITH THE GTC, which explains what we will be looking for in space once the telescope is in operation.

In the swirl of planets at the bottom right of the site you will find the PRESS RELEASES section, containing the latest information from the telescope; in WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IT? you can take a tour of the site, watch 3D animations and see photographs and videos of the GTC; and you will be able to access the webpage of the project proper in THE GTC FOR EXPERTS.

You will also be able to access a GLOSSARY and direct LINKS to other websites of interest. In PARTICIPATING ORGANISATIONS, you will get to know the partners and participants in the project and, if you want to get in touch with us you can consult ABOUT GTCdigital for details of how to email us with your questions and comments.

This, then, is GTCdigital: the easiest way to discover and learn how a telescope like the Gran Telescopio Canarias works, the opportunities it will present and the mysteries that will be unravelled by the first major science project to be headed by Spain.
