The big day is getting closer and everything is ready for the coming-out of the Gran Telescopio CANARIAS. The formal presentation to society already has a date: on 24th July, the inauguration will take place, and will be graced by the presence of Their Royal Highnesses The King and Queen of Spain. On the countdown to this “great ball”, the telescope has wanted to show us how it moves.
Rotating on itself, opening its hatch, raising itself up and pointing towards the firmament… From its privileged astrophysical vantage point at the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory, the GTC displays all its movements in order to gaze into the Universe. OSIRIS, the first of its instruments, is already connected to the Nasmyth centre and since last March began to operate openly for the astrophysics community. Once in operation, its first knowledge will not be long in coming.
